The Historic Reproduction Storm Glass is a home decor weather instrument that helps you find out when bad weather is coming. Invented in the 19th century by sailor and meteorologist Admiral FitzRoy, this device is a liquid and crystal filled storm glass that can predict the weather up to 2 days in advance. Changes in the crystal formations can indicate fair weather (clear liquid), rainy weather (murky liquid), thunderstorms (crystals at the top), cloudy skies with snow (large flaky crystals) and even windy weather (threads of crystals).

• Simple antique reproduction makes a great nostalgia gift to decorate your home
• Weather instrument features a glass tube glued into an elegant wooden base
• Admiral FitzRoy Historic Reproduction Storm Glass measures 6-1/2" tall.

Please Note: A valid street address is required. P.O. Box orders will not be accepted.

I want to update the customers who have bought and reviewed this item because my first review said this wasn't working for me. Well I'm happy to report that after I posted the first review, I still tried moving the storm glass to different areas of my small studio apt and shaking the glass to reset it so where I have it sitting now, it finally is working! The crystals do change and move around day to day, based on the weather. In my apt the glass is now sitting on a window sill with an a/c in the window and that's the only place it seems to work. I'll have to move it in the summer months because of the a/c being on but that's another story. I also received a very kind response from customer service on this review site (which you can see) and they sent me an email suggesting what I should try. Not only that but they already took the liberty of sending me another storm glass for free to replace this one if I'd like to do that or just to try another one or give it as a gift, though I'm not sure what to do with it yet. So thank you customer service for your thoughtful attention with this issue! And to those reviewers who are adamant about how the storm glass works without any issues, that's great but there are people like me who probably have a more challenging space to try and get this to work so I understand those who say it doesn't work but my advice is to try what I did and to not give up on this wonderful item.

Storm Glass doesn't work for me

I bought this item as a gift to myself and I too had high hopes this would work in my apartment but sadly I'm having the same trouble as other customers are... after 3 weeks of having this out in my NYC apartment the crystals haven't moved at all. I tried moving this to other parts of my apt but that hasn't helped. I've also tried shaking it with no results. I suppose I will try to use a blow dryer on it as well.

Responding to the people how say it does not work.

To all those who say it doesn't work. You don't know how to use it. It cannot be in direct sunlight. And it can't be in an overheated room. The directions are quite specific even if you look it up on mine. It's a shame that people can't read.

Followed advice of shaking contents and warming liquid. Didn't change anything. Still doesn't work. Very disappointing.

Ours doesn't seem to work at all

I purchased for one of my husband's Christmas gifts. We have allowed the enclosed directions about where to place and to let the thing set quietly since Saturday before Christmas... it never changes. We've had snow storms, rain, big wind - nothing different happens with our storm glass. don't know if this one is defective or what. The crystals just lay flat on the bottom of the glass. (see picture) Would not recommend at this time.

A Definite Winner

I keep mine inside my unheated hanger mostly as a smile getter, and while not recommended for accurate technical weather conditions, it often is not far from the mark. Gotta hand it to those early seafaring souls who placed their faith and life into these novel items. Like all instruments you need to learn how it works before jumping on here and showing your ignorance and intolerance by giving a nasty review.

I bought one of these from Bits & Pieces several years ago and gave my comment but somehow it was never posted. Nothing ever moved in the unit even when a tornado hit our house. We gave it to Goodwill.

This is my go-to gift for family events and holidays and a real conversation starter! I've bought so many over the years I've lost count. Some folks complain that it doesn't work in certain parts of their home - I say just move it around and try it in a different spot until you get the desired results.

I have a question.

I have purchased a Fitzroy Storm Glass but it doesn't seem to work in the house. Should it be outside?

I purchased one several years ago, I love it. It is more accurate than the tv weather men.

This thing is really pretty cool. I'm a sucker for unique items like this and was so impressed with it that I ordered another for a friend of mine. He loves it too.I've put a lot of thought into how this thing works and have decided to be comfortable with the fact that it really does work. A great conversation piece.
